lullaby and goodnight - tips for peaceful rest

For someone with an overactive mind, a Type A personality and an overwhelming desire to please the world, going to bed is dreadful. turning your mind off is harder to do than one would expect. as someone who is eager to work hard and be successful, sleep was never something I felt comfortable with because sleeping made me feel guilty. Like I was missing out on the world or not being productive. But, as I reflect on my life thus far I realize how essential a good nights rest is. It’s taken me almost two years to finally feel comfortable in going to sleep at a decent hour. However, turning my brain off wasn’t so easy. But, I’ve developed some tips that really help me fall asleep and stay asleep in my fast-paced, crazy world.
1. Find a candle that calms you. Light it half an hour before you want to go to bed. The aroma will relax you and clam your anxiety. Lavender is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime. Is can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. Try this one.
2. Find a book. An easy one, maybe it’s an author you’ve read before. But, definitely something that is lighthearted and easy to put down when you feel your eyes start to get heavy. I go for girlie books like this or this. (I highly recommend!)
3. Drink a cup of herbal tea. Nothing with caffeine! I like Tazo Rest, its specifically designed to help your body relax. It’s flavorful and light – made with rose petals and hints of citrus. If I'm feeling particularly anxious or stressed about the day to come, I like any form of chamomile tea.
4. Find a calming pillow spray and spray on your pillows and sheets 15 minutes before you want to get into bed. I like the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray and the Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Lavender Chamomile Pillow Spray.

4. Compartmentalize. Give your self permission to spend 30 minutes a day thinking about what you need to get done. Write your to-dos down, if need be, and keep the list away from your bed. Let those worries sneak away just long enough for you to fall asleep.

5. Blackout! Turn off the TV, get off the phone, stop checking emails! Any harsh backlight, even minimally, will severely impair your ability to get to sleep.
5.  A back scratch from a boyfriend/husband never hurts either ;)
Sleep tight and pleasant dreams!
